An overdue update

After working and volunteering as a multimedia consultant, photographer and videographer for several great organizations (Desmond Tutu-HIV Foundation, Save the Children, The University of Cape Town, etc.) in South Africa, I returned home to Canada in August to begin training for a Communications position with CUSO-VSO in Cambodia.

The position was a six week specialized placement in Cambodia over the course of October and November. My objective was to develop communications material for monitoring and evaluation on behalf of CUSO-VSO. Paired with a writer (former CBC reporter/producer Ian Porter), I was asked to gather photos, videos and print stories about Canadian volunteers, and programmatic funding and impact in the rural areas of Cambodia while also building media, photography and writing capacity with local VSO staff and volunteers.

After six weeks of work, hundreds of kilometres of bus/moto/foot travel, floods, mud, smiles and questions about programs, volunteers, local organizations, funding and the best place to get “fish amok” in every town we travelled to, I am quite happy to share with you a 5-6 photo teaser of some of my work.

During the placement, I took over 3000 images and 15 hours of video. The images have been edited down to 502 and the video will be edited into 6-7 vignettes about programs, funding and volunteers. Both the video and the photos were made available to VSO Cambodia for use in country and will also be used by CUSO-VSO globally for communications purposes. In additions the photos and video will be posted online at www.cuso-vso.org at various points during the coming months and I will share much of it here as part of my news blog and online portfolio.
